The project in Peckham seeks to solve the issue of how to connect a raised ground floor living area to a garden below. The property is an L shaped end of terrace house on a hill overlooking the city.
Our design creates a new basement playroom, cinema, kitchen diner and study space all opening out onto the garden, which is terraced down to connect to the lower ground floor level.
We developed two options for the upper floor plan, one with a new staircase taken through an existing window in the flank wall; the other with an external staircase connected to a cantilevered external terrace.
The material palette is left pure, with only three materials – polished concrete, plaster and exposed brick. The extension is built from Kolumba K54 brick. Joinery is made from reclaimed oak panels.
The upper floors contain bedrooms and bathrooms with a large loft area with sweeping views towards the city.
