Our Sun Slice House and Spa project is an award winning transformation of a Victorian semi-detached house in South Cambridge. The result is a meticulously designed extension, enveloping the existing house and marked out by a series of skylights creating an abundance of natural light inside the home. Outside, a new garden, designed by landscape designer, @janebrockbank, links the house with the ‘Dark Spa’; a secluded retreat for busy parents and contrasts with the light-filled interiors of Sun Slice House.

Neil Dusheiko Architects were asked to turn a former industrial unit housing a clothing showroom into a family home in a Mews behind Hyde Park.

The L-shaped terrace is located in the Bayswater Conservation Area and occupies a snug corner of a cul-de-sac, historically the coach house quarters to Georgian properties behind.

The attention to detail and level of craftsmanship resulted in happy clients and industry awards.

The project has been featured online at Dezeen and Wallpaper.

Interior Design Inspo:

We are delighted to share that Tree View House won two awards at the @britishhomesawards this week.

We won:
Home Transformation of The Year
(Up To 2,500 Sq Ft) and
Interior Designer of The Year

Here are some notes on the interior design concept.

The overall concept in this project drew inspiration from the landscape beyond. In particular, the Hawthorn trees that surrounded the site as well as the way the site adjacent to a public park was prone to flooding in heavy rains.

The interior was organised as a set of terraces using retaining walls to dispel flood waters while at the same time bringing the house closer to the garden level. The double fronted house lent itself to be split into two parts on the ground floor with black polished concrete forming two pier like structures extending into the garden.

These two parts were separated by terracotta tiles, which also formed the cladding to the fireplace, reinforcing the biophilic connection of material formed by fire being used for the cladding.

The rest of the material palette followed suit, the kitchen worktop was formed by Atlantic Lava Stone, the splashbacks were bronze tinted mirror, and the rest of the cladding was Lebanese Cedar. The grain and divisions of timber set up to recall the grain of the Hawthorn trees outside.

Architecture done well transcends space and patter

Architecture done well transcends space and pattern making. It can provide far more benefits than financial ROI calculations. It's not about glossy dopamine feeding image fodder either.

Our team at NDA is more concerned about how architecture can act as a mediator between the built (constructed) condition and the found condition of its urban / rural context and landscape.
We can explore how a work of architecture can connect mind, body, and spirit. How it can provide a nurturing sanctuary for people's lives.

If spaces are provided for people to pause, reset, and relax, they can return to the outside world rejuvenated and composed. They can bring their best selves to whatever they do.

That's what we did here as part of this refurbishment project, we converted a disused roof space into a zen meditation shrine. We fitted out the dormer space with tatami mats and a hammock. There is a great sense of calm in these spaces. We also included space for chanoyu, the Japanese tea ceremony.

Our Danish Mews House in Hyde Park recently got a makeover by the Sims Hilditch team for the new owners.

This is the original staircase, clad in Dinesen timber with open risers and a Douglas Fir swept handrail. We spend a lot of time sketching out how materials meet and resolving the tactile elements to somehow make everything feel elegant and effortless.

It takes a talented photographer like Billy Bolton to catch these little plays of proportion embedded in our design as well as getting the atmosphere of how this Mews House feels just right.

When we designed our Sun Slice House and Spa in Cambridge, having the two buildings connect across a beautiful landscaped garden was a key move.

The garden designed by Jane Brockbank achieved this. Split into zones that include a stone patio with plants embedded within the York paving, a formal lawn, vegetable allotment and a wild meadow garden to screen the private spaces of the garden spa.

Introducing Tina Bergman.

We're delighted to announce that Tina Bergman has joined our team at Neil Dusheiko Architects. With over 15 years in the field, Tina brings a grounded approach to architecture. Starting her journey in her own practice established in 2014, she's crafted designs deeply rooted in the context of Sweden, realising a care home and many other contextually sensitive homes in Sweden.

In the UK, she has had notable collaborations, such as with Herzog & de Meuron, have enriched her experience, such as her involvement in the Royal College of Art’s Battersea facility. From simple summer cabins to community-driven projects, she's always approached her work with showing a love of craft and an appreciation of place.

Beyond buildings, Tina has a keen interest in art, often channelling her creativity into exhibitions. As she becomes part of our team, we look forward to the insights and experience she'll share with us. We're glad to have her onboard!
