This emphasises its verticality, giving the interiors a more expansive sense of scale than before and addressing the existing cellular arrangement by opening up vistas between rooms and towards the garden. From the ground floor living space, it is now possible to look upwards through the whole house and towards one of a series of large rooflights. Balconies, landings and windows open on to this void, helping to bring daylight deep into every room. At the centre of the house, above the retained period fireplace, a specially commissioned artwork by Italian artist Soda sits through the void, consisting of a series of fractured geometric planes that move upwards through the space. A double-height green wall, emphasising connections to nature, lines the enclosed side return, supported by a rainwater harvesting system fed from wastewater from the skylight. Throughout the home, natural timber has been used: in the retained exposed structural timber frame, the deep walnut bath overlooking the green wall, and the charred timber cladding to the rear elevation. This fusion is cradled by the clean lines of the house, creating a serene yet dynamic environment. It’s a living gallery that evokes the essence of my Sri Lankan roots, where nature’s embrace is a revered architectural principle. Every room whispers stories of joy, uncovering new details in each glance. Neil and his team have crafted not just a structure, but a heartfelt homage to a tropical heritage within a Victorian house.
