You asked where the stair went.
This is the answer — the helical oak stair at Lindley House, seen from the corridor below, rising through all five levels of the building against limewash plaster, with the planted atrium beyond.
Lindley House is our largest project to date. A former industrial office on Ardleigh Road in De Beauvoir — once home to C. Lindley & Co., manufacturers of nuts and bolts since the 19th century — transformed into a 650 sqm family home. The building's industrial bones are still here. We worked with them rather than against them.
At the heart of the scheme is a three-storey planted atrium, open to the sky. Every room in the house looks into it. The stair connects all five levels around it.
Planning approved. Now in detailed design.
If you are considering a project of similar scale or ambition — a conversion, a large-scale refurbishment, or a new house — we would like to hear from you.

Church House is now live on Dezeen.
A project shaped by context, memory and view — a contemporary reworking of a Cambridgeshire home and coach house beside a Grade II* listed Gothic church. The extension is modest in footprint but transformative in effect: opening the plan, bringing in light, and framing the church as part of daily life. A calm dialogue between old and new, designed to feel rooted in its setting.
Huge thanks to everyone involved:

Meet Laura O’Brien who has recently joined our team — Laura is a highly accomplished architect with over 12 years of experience across private residential, historic restoration, housing and community projects.
Educated at University College Dublin and KTH Stockholm, Laura completed her Part 3 with Distinction at UCL. Before joining NDA, she was an Associate at James Gorst Architects and Senior Architect at Al-Jawad Pike.
Laura leads projects across all RIBA Stages, with particular expertise in Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas. Her work ranges from the restoration of Grade I Listed Georgian townhouses in St James’s Square, to award-winning community buildings and contemporary country houses.
Her approach is thoughtful, precise and materially driven — using natural materials with care to create architecture rooted in context, history and place. She is also deeply committed to sustainable design and low-carbon construction.
Laura’s work has received a Design Award at the East Suffolk Quality of Place Awards, and has been shortlisted for the Wood Awards, Civic Trust Awards, Architects’ Journal Awards, and the MJ Long Prize for Excellence in Practice at the W Awards 2024.
Her work has also been featured in Architectural Review, and she has lectured at the Architectural Association of Ireland.
Laura is currently leading our office to residential conversion in De Beauvoir which starts on site in the summer.
We’re proud to have her as part of the studio.

Iterations on iterations
Our Chelsea House is nearing completion.
This Chelsea terrace sits in a Conservation Area, looking out over a Listed church. The brief called for a careful refurbishment: sensitive to place, serious about performance, and considered in every detail.
The house incorporates an air source heat pump and operable skylights for passive ventilation — quietly reducing its footprint without compromise to the architecture.
The material palette does the atmospheric work: polished plaster walls, band-sawn timber floors, and an open-riser staircase suspended on cables — light, reflective, and precise.
Alongside this, the project has been shaped through a series of design iterations — testing proportion, light, and material against one another. Small adjustments accumulate: the depth of a reveal, the height of a threshold, the tone of a wall, the position of a skylight. Each version clarifies the next.
What remains is not the first idea, but the one that holds together — spatially, materially, and in use.
Developed with our clients, with care and rigour throughout. We are looking forward to seeing this one finished in a few months.
If you are thinking about a project in London or beyond, we would be glad to hear from you. Link in bio.

Ardleigh Road, De Beauvoir
A study in light across a single space.
The stair is conceived as a continuous timber element, shaped by movement and revealed through changing light conditions across the day. From the softness of morning, through the neutrality of midday, to the quiet atmosphere of evening, the architecture remains constant while its presence shifts.
Rather than relying on form alone, the project explores how material, proportion and light work together to create a calm and enduring spatial experience.

A careful transformation of a Villa in Canonbury — opening the house to light, garden and movement while retaining its quiet presence within the terrace.
The project amalgamates to houses into one.
At the heart of the project, a bespoke mural by an artist unfolds across a double-height space — a drawing that explores atmosphere, light and depth. It anchors the interior while reinforcing the verticality of the space and its connection to the garden beyond.
The reworked plan creates a continuous relationship between inside and outside, where volume, material and landscape are held in balance.

House of the Elements is a radical remodelling of a Victorian terraced home in London, creating a beautiful spa-like retreat in another otherwise ordinary urban setting. Bold spatial gestures, a focus on connections to nature, and also a sense of fun make this an exciting and highly unusual home. House of the Elements explores the concept of space as a living entity, where time is measured not only by human presence and daily rituals but also by the growth and nurturing of plants, and the passage of light throughout the day.

Ardleigh Road is:
A former office building re-imagined as a calm, generous home — working with what was already there, rather than forcing something new onto it.
The project is driven by light, proportion and atmosphere: deep thresholds, carefully judged openings, and a sequence of spaces that unfold slowly rather than announce themselves all at once. Materials are deliberately limited, allowing texture, shadow and daily use to do the work over time.
This is not architecture as gesture.
It is architecture as inhabitation — quiet, durable, and designed to improve with age.

Throw back to when the Tree View House won two awards at the @britishhomesawards !
We won:
Home Transformation of The Year
(Up To 2,500 Sq Ft) and
Interior Designer of The Year
The overall concept in this project drew inspiration from the landscape beyond. In particular, the Hawthorn trees that surrounded the site as well as the way the site adjacent to a public park was prone to flooding in heavy rains.
The interior was organised as a set of terraces using retaining walls to dispel flood waters while at the same time bringing the house closer to the garden level. The double fronted house lent itself to be split into two parts on the ground floor with black polished concrete forming two pier like structures extending into the garden.
These two parts were separated by terracotta tiles, which also formed the cladding to the fireplace, reinforcing the biophilic connection of material formed by fire being used for the cladding.
The rest of the material palette followed suit, the kitchen worktop was formed by Atlantic Lava Stone, the splashbacks were bronze tinted mirror, and the rest of the cladding was Lebanese Cedar. The grain and divisions of timber set up to recall the grain of the Hawthorn trees outside.

A quiet corner of our Aberdeen Park project, where calm materials and subtle detailing create a sense of ease.
The rhythm of the exposed timber rafters is accentuated by a hidden LED strip, adding a warm wash of light that shifts the mood from day to evening. The result is a space that feels both grounded and gently elevated.

Over the summer, we collaborated with the talented Jim Stephenson and Edward Bishop to capture the spirit of our Aberdeen Park project, completed earlier this year.
Jim delivered a stunning collection of atmospheric photographs, while Edward produced a beautifully crafted 3-minute film, along with some striking images. Both are now live on our website. Their work truly encapsulates the essence of this home and the meaningful journey of our clients in bringing it to life.
Architectural photography holds a vital role in revealing the nuanced beauty of private residential projects. For us, it’s the palpable sense of atmosphere that makes each home unique—something that transcends visual design alone.
Huge thanks to our dedicated team and collaborators—Talina, Price & Myers, AJ Oakes, Lazenby, Maxlight, K&D, and Project Architect James Barker—for their remarkable efforts in making this project a success.
