In an age dominated by digital renderings and Ai, there’s something deeply powerful about a physical model. The weight of it in your hands, the play of light across its surfaces, the ability to explore space from every angle—it’s a tool that bridges imagination and reality.

At our studio, model making is an integral part of our design process. It allows us to test ideas, refine proportions, and communicate spatial qualities in a way that drawings and screens never fully capture. It’s tactile, intuitive, and incredibly revealing.

This model, crafted by Luca, embodies that philosophy. Photographed beautifully by Billy Bolton, it represents more than just a concept—it’s a glimpse into what’s to come.

Sun Slice House & Dark Spa, Cambridge A few years

Sun Slice House & Dark Spa, Cambridge
A few years ago, our Sun Slice House & Dark Spa was shortlisted for a RIBA Award—and now, Edmund Sumner’s stunning drone footage captures it in a whole new light.

This project began as a restoration and extension of a Victorian semi-detached house in South Cambridge, carefully balancing old and new. Our clients wanted a home that worked for modern family life—spaces for homeschooling, remote work, and connection to nature—while preserving the character of the original house.

At the heart of our design is light. A series of skylights, set on a diagonal, channel daylight deep into the house, shifting through the day like a pendulum of light. A vaulted sedum-planted roof bridges the old and new, adding texture and biodiversity. The materials—handcrafted Petersen Brick and salvaged stock brick—create a natural dialogue between past and present.

At the end of the garden, the Dark Spa forms a secluded retreat, clad in shou sugi ban timber, housing a sauna, Japanese soaking tub, gym, and relaxation space. A natural meadow and vegetable garden act as a soft threshold between house and spa, reinforcing the connection between architecture and landscape.

Designed as a downsizing move for our clients, the project transforms their generous rear garden into a thoughtfully designed, environmentally sustainable home that balances modern living with respect for the conservation area. The two-storey dwelling is shaped around an east-facing courtyard, offering light-filled spaces and a strong connection to nature.

Inspired by mid-century houses, this pavilion extension transforms the home, bringing warmth, light, and a stronger connection to the garden.

Our client approached us to reorganize and extend their early 1990s property, which suffered from a disconnected ground floor layout. We reconfigured the plan, placing the kitchen at its heart and introducing a single-storey pavilion extension. This new space, with its natural material palette of Petersen Kolumba bricks, concrete flooring, and Western Red Cedar ceilings, shifts the focus of the home, enclosing a tranquil courtyard.

We are a small studio solely devoted to designing exceptional homes for people who love architecture. Our inspiration comes from a belief that great design can nurture the soul. The spirit of adventure and experimentation underpins every project we do, which makes every project unique.

Imagine the delight of collaborating with a studio which starts with the obvious and ends with the unexpected.

We are now seeking highly motivated and talented Project Architects to join our awesome team. We are working on a range of new build houses and high-end residential projects.

A Project Architect should have 2-3 years UK experience post-Part 3 qualification and a Senior Project Architect min 7 years UK experience post-Part 3 qualification. We would also consider a very experienced Part 2 Architect or a non-ARB registered architect as long as you have UK Residential experience.

You will be able to demonstrate good leadership, communication and team working ability, thorough knowledge of UK planning and building regulations, strong administrative skills and advanced knowledge of Vectorworks, Sketchup, Enscape and Adobe Suite.

The ideal candidate will have worked on at least two houses through all RIBA Stages.

I’m currently on holiday in Cape Town where I gr

I’m currently on holiday in Cape Town where I grew up and spent my formative years as a child. I love it here. The abundance of sunlight, the verdant flora, the mountains, ocean, forests and people. The architecture here is very informal, it speaks about a languid yet effortless approach. The first approach is to embrace all the “given” attributes of a site, to carefully notice what is there and play around with them. It highlights more discreet elements to create new compositions that aren’t that obvious at a first glance, this allows architecture to recede and one’s experiences to move to the forefront in how one reads their environment.

In my own house I drew on this, I tried to create a space that reminded me of being in this special city while also acknowledging the Swedish heritage of my wife. The Victorian terrace house we adapted provided the perfect canvas for this.

Things got moved out of place where they would be traditionally, like our staircase for instance which connects our lounge and dining room.
The skylight above creates a bright slot, like a gap between things to focus on a neatly planted silver birch tree. The floor pattern of travertine tiles has a slipped module showing that things don’t perfectly align. Timber is used internally on the walls and runs outside to form the fence so even the inside and outside boundaries are a bit blurred.

Inside, everything just glows from reflected light off walls painted in earthy colours, so even white walls are given different hues at varying times of day.

Over the summer we worked with Jim Stephenson & Edward Bishop to capture the essence of our Aberdeen Park project completed this year.

Jim took a series of gorgeous atmospheric photos and Edward did a 3 minute film and some photos too. Both are on our website now. They do an amazing job in conveying the essence of the house and the clients’ journey in bringing it to life.

Architectural photography plays a crucial role in showcasing diverse perspectives of completed projects, which is particularly important for private works of architecture, such as residential homes.

As an architectural firm that specialises in crafting extraordinary homes around our client’s lives, it’s that sense of atmosphere that sets our work apart. It’s something that is sensed.

As 2024 winds down we would like to wish all our team, clients, consultants, contractors, followers a relaxing break over the festive season.

It’s been a productive year here at NDA. Our team has grown, we’ve handed over 3 homes and have many more in progress. I reckon we’ve drunk over 3000 cups of coffee, eaten lots of cake and had a fair few drinks in the local pubs around Canonbury too.

We remain committed to the cause of making great domestic architecture, creating beautiful homes people love and having a fun time doing it.

A few years ago I was fortunate to get a chance to

A few years ago I was fortunate to get a chance to renovate my home in Stoke Newington after living there for almost 10 years. To be honest it was a challenge balancing running a busy practise, my wife pregnant with our second child and a very tight budget but somehow we managed.

We knew exactly what we wanted. A house that drew on our roots as a family. My wife is part Swedish and I grew up in South Africa so our project draws on Scandi influences we loved, while recalling holidays on the coast in Cape Town. The house is extremely informal and very sociable.

Spaces overlap, bringing us together and even when the weather is poor, my kids remark that they feel like they're on holiday in the house sometimes.

The garden designed by @janebrockbank is the star though. We use it all year round! In fact we are braaing (a South African term for cooking over a fire) through winter. Why not?

One of the challenges of design is getting the balance of natural light and artificial light right. We want lighting to tell a story about the spaces character but also ensure that the focal point of the rooms are supported by light, either natural and artificial. We also want there to be a flow, in the time when natural light fades and gives the artificial light a chance to glow and shine. Continuing the story as time passes...

🏆 We are thrilled to announce that our “House of Elements” project has been awarded “Best House” at the Evening Standard Awards and received a “Highly Commended” at the British Home Awards!

✨ Winner’s citation from the Evening Standard Awards:

“The BEST HOUSE for the smaller developer began life as a traditional Victorian terrace, which has been completely, and sustainably, reinvented as a modern home with a spectacular garden. House of Elements is a radical remodelling of a Victorian terraced home, transformed into a spa-like retreat with bold spatial gestures, connections to nature, and a focus on wellbeing. Drawing inspiration from the client’s Sri Lankan heritage and the work of architect Geoffrey Bawa, the design seamlessly blends social spaces with natural light and greenery.
