Residential Architecture - London

Residential architecture
shaped around daily life

A well-designed home has to accommodate the different rhythms of daily life. It needs to make room for privacy and gathering, work and rest, family life, quiet retreat and the small daily rituals that give a place its character. Our role is to understand these patterns carefully and translate them into architecture that feels generous, personal and enduring.

Across our residential work, light, quality materials and atmosphere are integral to the design. We look closely at how daylight moves through a home, how rooms connect, how old and new meet, and how a house can become more open to the garden and enjoyable in all seasons.

Our studio profile explains more about this way of working: a process shaped by the brief, the site and the people at the centre of the house.

Heritage and Conservation

Thoughtful architecture for London homes with history

Many London homes carry several lives within them. Some have been altered over generations. Others sit within conservation areas, are listed buildings, or occupy sensitive sites where planning, neighbours, structure and daylight have to be held in careful balance.

We do not see these conditions as obstacles to design. They are often the starting point for the architectural idea. Older buildings have distinctive proportions, craftsmanship and character that draw homeowners to them in the first place.

Our team brings experience of complex planning applications, listed buildings and homes within conservation areas. We combine this knowledge with design ambition, technical precision and a clear understanding of how the house needs to work as a home.

For homes within a designated setting, our conservation area architects in London page explains how planning sensitivity can be held within the wider architectural idea. For listed or historically significant homes, see our work as listed building architects in London.

Our Projects

Selected residential projects in London

Aberdeen Park House, Highbury

Aberdeen Park House reflects the studio’s approach to substantial residential transformation in North London, where light, structure, material warmth and the relationship between old and new need to be carefully held together.

The project has been shortlisted for the British Homes Awards 2025 and longlisted for Don’t Move, Improve, adding to the studio’s wider body of recognised residential work.

House of the Elements, Peckham

House of the Elements transforms a Victorian terraced house into a calm, nature-connected home shaped around wellbeing, light and sensory experience.

The project introduces full-height voids, light wells, framed garden views and a double-height green wall that draws planting into the centre of the house. Rainwater harvesting supports the living wall, while the architecture creates a sense of calm expansion within the constraints of a London terrace.

House of the Elements won Best House at the Evening Standard Awards 2024 and was also recognised by the British Homes Awards and Don’t Move, Improve.

Sun Slice House, Shelford, Cambridgeshire

Our brief was to extend and restore a Victorian semi-detached house that had fallen into disrepair in South Cambridge. Our clients also wanted to add a new-build outdoor leisure space to the end of their garden to house a gym, sauna and spa area.

Danish Mews House, Lancaster Gate, near Hyde Park

Danish Mews House transforms a former commercial showroom within a historic mews into a warm, light-filled family home. A new central staircase draws daylight deep into the compact plan, while Douglas fir, bespoke joinery and tactile materials bring warmth and generosity to the interiors.
The project won Best Interior Design: Individual Home over £500,000 and Interior Designer of the Year at the British Home Awards.

Tilde House, Canonbury

Tilde House is a substantial renovation and extension to a Grade II listed semi-detached villa in Canonbury, where heritage fabric and contemporary design are held in careful balance.

The extension’s black sawtooth brickwork sets a quiet modern geometry against the glazed facade of the Georgian house, while inside the kitchen pairs black timber with warm oak grain to give the rooms depth and texture.

The house was approached as an act of stewardship: original detail restored where it should be protected, and new work introduced where it brings clarity, light and generosity to daily life.

Dusheiko House, Stoke Newington

Dusheiko House is a radical remodelling of a Victorian terrace in North London, created as a deeply personal exploration of home-making.

By opening up old divisions and drawing daylight through two levels, the design turns a once dark and fragmented house into a warm, connected family home. It is a project about material honesty, daily rituals, light and the quiet pleasure of making a home that can adapt with family life.

Tree View House, High Barnet

Tree View House brings together natural materials, greenery and a layered sense of personal narrative. The project reflects the studio’s interest in homes that draw from memory, heritage and landscape rather than following a fixed architectural style.

Tree View House won Home Transformation of the Year and Interior Designer of the Year at the British Homes Awards, and was also shortlisted for AJ Retrofit and Don’t Move, Improve.

Design process

A design process led by listening, light and material

Good residential architecture begins with understanding the house, the site and the way its occupants want to live. Before drawing conclusions, we look closely at all three.

Our process considers:

The existing building

We look closely at original character, later alterations, structure, material condition, daylight, thresholds and garden connection. The house itself often gives the first clues.

The way you live

A home needs to support the rhythms of daily life: cooking, work, family gatherings, privacy, retreat and time spent together. These patterns help shape the plan, the sequence of rooms and the way the house is experienced.

Planning and technical complexity

Residential projects in London often require careful coordination between design, planning, structure, conservation, interiors and construction. We bring these strands together so the architecture remains coherent from first idea to finished home.

Long-term use

We design homes to endure, adapt and age well. Sustainability is not treated as a visual style, but as a responsibility: how materials are chosen, how spaces perform and how the house can continue to serve the people who live in it.

You can read more about the studio’s design thinking on our Approach page.

Interior architecture

A holistic approach - Architecture, interior design and landscape united

For many clients, architecture and interiors are inseparable. The character of a hallway or staircase, the texture of a wall, the warmth of timber, the depth of a window reveal and the relationship between inside and garden all contribute to how a home feels and is lived in.

Where appropriate, we develop the interior architecture as part of the wider residential project, considering layout, joinery, materials, light and atmosphere together. This is particularly valuable in period homes, listed buildings and complex refurbishments, where careful interventions can preserve the character of the existing house while allowing it to work beautifully for contemporary life.
